Zurich | Switzerland 2023

Zurich makes for a perfect day trip from Como!

From Como, we embarked on a long day trip to Zurich, a scenic four-hour journey through the Alps. Along the way, we were treated to stunning views of quaint villages, snow-capped mountains, and sleepy winter farms that looked like they belonged in a postcard. When we arrived, the city was cold and drizzly—perfect weather for wandering. We strolled along the main shopping streets, crossed the river a few times, and eventually stopped for lunch at Zeughauskeller, a restaurant we chose thanks to a recommendation from one of our restaurant customers. They had mentioned during a previous visit that they were from Zurich, so after a bit of correspondence, I asked them for their favorite local spots. Their enthusiastic response included Zeughauskeller, and we were thrilled to follow their advice.

The moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by a roaring fireplace and the lively buzz of fellow diners. Seated at a large communal table, we shared schnitzel and pasta accompanied by a bottle of local white wine, enjoying both the food and the chance to watch and converse with other guests. The meal left such a mark on us that when we returned home, we adopted a dog and named him Schnitzel in honor of the unforgettable lunch. Schnitzel quickly became a beloved member of our family, and every time we look at him, we’re reminded of that cozy, bustling restaurant, the warmth of the fire, and the fun we had exploring Zurich that day.

After lunch, we explored further, visiting the historic Grossmünster church, sampling local chocolates, and tracking down a Raclette restaurant—a small personal goal for the day. Between its alpine journey, historic charm, and unforgettable cuisine, Zurich made for a truly memorable day trip.
